Holding Me Back

From Ireland comes the absolutely amazing Miranda Faul and with her comes the powerful and uniquely captivating musical reality of "Holding Me Back". With this beautifully crafted blend of melodies and lyrics we are given a chance to explore a different side of a love story, a side that does not seem to overly happy and connected with all the rainbows and butterflies. But it is a side that is honest with itself, accepting that sometimes things can be too much and they can suffocate you and instead of bringing peace, it brings anxiety and discomfort.

There's something about "Holding Me Back" that is sure to resonate with many listeners as it explores a love that seems magical, yet in reality places you in a cage, a beautiful golden cage that you can fly around but not out of it. It understands that sometimes we need strength to leave something that can be good, but not for you, because personally love should let you shine even brighter than before and if it dampens your brilliance, then it's not the place for you. So listen closely, pay attention and let these verses connect with your heart and soul as this must-listen gem comes alive. Enjoy!

“‘Holding Me Back’ is a song about overwhelming, suffocating love. It's about meaning too much to someone, to the point that you can’t give them what they expect of you. They’re also blurring your mind, so you can’t see the situation clearly. You know that they’re hurting you, but you can’t break free; you can’t unwind yourself from them.

Most of its lyrics came from a poem I wrote a few years ago about family. I used it to write ‘Holding Me Back’ about love last year. I was playing around with chords and wrote a sad little waltz, and the song came from there. It was produced by Willem van Dijk, a friend and producer from The Hague. It’s our first release together.

We started stripped and folky, and built to an upbeat, alt pop vibe. Listening to it now, it feels fun but sad - the lyrics came from the heart and it hurts me a little to hear them, but in a cathartic way. I like to do that with my songs; to make them bright and sparkly, but try to catch listeners off guard with darker lyrics they can connect to.”
