‘Libby’ by Libby Johnston

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The fantastic New York-based/New Zealand-native artist Libby Johnston gives the world a chance to be part of her world with the ‘Libby’ EP. With this fantastic collection of songs, we get a special opportunity to dive into 5 tales that are bound to speak to our hearts and souls from the moment we press play. With them she explores the ups and downs of love and life in a way that is youthful yet still mature and honest enough to embrace everyone who listens with a welcomed mix of vulnerability and warmth.

The young artists takes a look within and in her own experiences finds the inspiration to give these songs a cinematic and palpable touch that is refreshing to find nowadays. It’s a step away from what we are used to lyrically, but that’s what makes these soundscape so appealing and so inviting, because they feel real and not filled with exaggeration and overthinking the way in which to make them a commercial hit, but heartfelt stories that speak to everyone.

Out of the 5 songs that make up the ‘Libby’ EP, I found 2 that stood out a bit more than the rest for me, they are: “Handle with Care” and “Ruins”(Ft. Joey Miceli).

The first explores the fear and hope that new love brings, because your heart has known pain and been broken before, but you don’t want to close the door at that magical experience. It’s a welcome showcase of vulnerability that understands that while we are willing to be brave, we are still scare and the scars might still be fresh, so please…just handle me with care.

While the second is a collaboration made in musical heaven. their voices complement each other so well as they give life to a bittersweet tale that is bound to speak to more than a few listeners. I won’t say much about it, but I am sure, there will be some who will feel these verses as much theirs as it is of these amazing artists.

So listen closely to each and every track that calls this EP home, for they are part of an amazing showcase of talent, of raw feelings and emotions, of magic and of the sweet beauty found in storytelling.
