The Magicians is a television show based on a novel of the same name written by Lev Grossman, published on 2009. After receiving critical acclaim and followed by two more books (“The Magician King” and “The Magician’s Land”) it was adapted into a television show airing on SYFY.
On the first episode we get a brief glimpse of magic and we meet Quentin Coldwater (played by Jason Ralph) and his best friends James (played by Michael Cassidy) and Julia Wicker (played by Stella Maeve). Here we are introduced to characters that will sure be important for the growth of the show and we get a chance to see the wonderful school for magicians known as Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. In this very episode we see two friends taking separate paths; one (Quentin) to Brakebills and the other (Julia) to the regular world … but not for long. We also get a chance to see magic, I personally enjoyed Alice Quinn’s (played by Olivia Taylor Dudley) magic and of course Quentin’s.
This first episode is just an introduction, it takes its time but it shows us around this world we are just seeing. It actually got me interested enough that I will be purchasing the Novel this weekend, because you know they always say the books are better. The show was pretty good, so I have high hopes for the novel.
One thing I would have to truly critique is the pace of the show which seems slow at times but the visuals are top quality, they keep you engaged and the way the show magic is simply awesome. Maybe it’s just because it’s starting that the pace seems that way, I do hope so, because the characters and the story have a lot to offer if done right. I will wait and see, but for this first episode I would rate them at a 6.5/10.
The Magicians is a fantasy television show that airs on SYFY on Mondays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time/9 p.m Central Time.
