‘Void’ by Winona Oak

Rating: 5 out of 5.

From Sweden comes the uber-talented and always amazing Winona Oak and she does so with the exhilarating musical creation that is the ‘Void’ EP. With this body of work she comes to these lands which once were like a home for her music and reminds me why that was the case. Her songs are pure, honest, uniquely haunting and truly quite intoxicating from start to end, never letting go of you, not even after the EP ends. Her voice is as perfect as I remembered it and each song manages to offer our imagination a world to run wild, free and to be human as they explore various facets of life with a mix of surrealism and palpable storytelling.

There’s something about the ‘Void’ EP that makes it not only a beautiful collection of songs meant to be explored but a great addition to any digital collection. It’s an EP that embraces us whole and gives music lovers a wide array of stories that are sure to speak to us and feel ours as they come alive thanks the always alluring play button.

There’s 6 songs in the ‘Void’ EP and they are all fantastic, there’s no wrong choice when it comes to picking favorites, but if I had to pick, I would say there’s two whose magic spoke to my heart a bit more. They are: “Fragile Thing” and “If I Were To Die”.

“Fragile Thing” understands and accepts the fragile truth of our human condition in a way that is not only inviting, but refreshing, for it exposes the reality of our existence. It’s a track that speaks to another unknown presence asking them to please see that the heart is not a toy and that love is not a fleeting dream, it’s a gentle plea to embrace her and never let go. It’s an open letter that is sure to speak to us for it uses words that resonate and really connect.

On the other hand, “If I Were To Die” is slightly fatalistic but uniquely endearing and relatable tale from start to end. It understands that there are moments in which a certain level of bliss (happiness, joy, etc) has been reached and you would do everything to keep it yours, accepting that it cannot be found without the person who was there by your side to turn it into reality.

So listen closely to each and every track that makes up the ‘Void’ EP and explore each tale, for they all have something very real and raw to share. Enjoy the beauty and very human nature of this amazing EP!

Last year was by far the worst year of my life. When my mom passed away, I lost a part of myself that I will never get back. I’ve never felt so empty, so far from the person that I used to be. Living with grief is like learning how to live with half a heart. Everything is a constant reminder of what could have been. This EP was created in the middle of the chaos, with a void inside my chest. All the lyrics are raw and unfiltered, there’s parts of me in these songs that will tell you more about me than I could ever explain.”
