“Twelve is a song about finally meeting yourself. How painful, awkward and beautiful that can be. You feel like a 12-year-old whose body, hormones and whole world is about to change. Though you are terrified, there is a deep peace and excitement there too. It was too hard trying to be someone else and you have grown tired. As a Saudi woman, I often reference my experience as a delayed adolescence of sorts. I am just now in the process of accepting the people I must lose on the journey to myself. In this song I mourn the loss of my best friend and the version of me that was desperately trying to be more like her so I could keep her.”
